What is Minimally Invasive Foot Surgery?

Minimally invasive foot surgery is an exciting approach to treating various foot conditions with precision and minimal disruption to surrounding tissues. Unlike traditional open surgeries, which typically require large incisions, this advanced technique involves making incisions less than 5 mm in size. Through these tiny openings, Dr. Cox utilizes specialized instruments to address the underlying foot problem without the use of hardware such as plates, screws or pins.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY?

  • Less injury – With minimally invasive foot surgery, there is less injury to the surrounding soft tissue. Traditional open surgery where long incisions are utilized  create more trauma to the soft tissue. Minimally invasive surgery uses much smaller incisions disturbing less tissue. The end result is a quicker recovery time.

  • Less pain – Studies have shown that patients of minimally invasive surgery report less pain than those patients undergoing traditional surgery.  As a result, patients that undergo minimally invasive surgery require less use of addictive pain medications.

  • Shorter surgery time – Because there is a small incision, surgery times for minimally invasive foot surgery procedures are often shorter than traditional open surgeries. Most of these procedures can be performed in the comfort of our office based surgical suite allowing patients to avoid a time-consuming day at the hospital altogether.

  • Less anesthesia – Due to the nature of minimally invasive foot surgery procedures, patients often remain awake during surgery after careful local anesthesia to the foot area, reducing the use of general anesthesia. This opens up surgery possibilities for patients who may have previously been considered "at risk" for traditional surgeries due to medical history.

  • Less scarring – As a result of minimally invasive foot surgeries’ smaller incisions, scars left by these procedures are smaller and less noticeable. Of the scars that do form, they are often more cosmetically pleasing than those left by traditional open surgeries.
